Schedules of the Indian Constitution

Currently, there are 12 Schedules and 448  Articles in the Constitution of India. Originally, the world's lengthiest written Constitution had 395 Articles and 8 Schedules. 





Schedules are basically contains additional details which is not mentioned in the articles.

List of Schedules : 12 Schedules of the Indian Constitution :


1. FIRST SCHEDULE :
• Names of the States and their Territorial Jurisdiction.
• Name of Union Territories and their extent.
• Articles Covered : 1 and 4

2. SECOND SCHEDULE :
• Provisions relating to the emoluments, allowances, privileges and so on of -
I. The President of India
II. The Governor of State
III. The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha
IV. The Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha
V. The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Indian States
VI. The Chairman and the Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council of the Indian States
VII. The Judges of the Supreme Court
VIII. The Judges of the High Court
IX. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India

4. FOURTH SCHEDULE :
• Allocation of seats in the Rajya Sabha to the States and the Union Territories (UTs).

5. FIFTH SCHEDULE : 
• Provisions relating to the administration and control of Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes.
• Article Covered : 244

6. SIXTH SCHEDULE : 
• Provisions relating to the administration of Tribal Areas in the States of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.
• Articles Covered : 244 and 275

7. SEVENTH SCHEDULE :
• It deals with the Three Legislative Lists -
I. Union List (100 Subjects)
II. State List (61 Subjects)
III. Concurrent List (52 Subjects)

8. EIGHTH SCHEDULE :
• 22 Official Languages recognized by the Indian Constitution. Originally, it had 14 languages. The 22 languages are -

VIII. Kashmiri
IX. Konkani
X. Mathili
XI. Malayalam

9. NINTH SCHEDULE :
• Acts and Regulations (originally 13 but presently 282) of the State Legislatures dealing with land reforms and abolition of the Zamindari System and the Parliament dealing with other matters.
• Article Covered : 31-B

Note :
Ninth schedule was added by the 1st Amendment (1951) to protect the laws included in it from judicial scrutiny on the ground of violation of fundamental rights.

However, in 2007, the Supreme Court rule ruled that the laws included in this scheduled after April 24, 1973, are now open to Judicial Review.

10. TENTH SCHEDULE :
• Provisions relating to Disqualification of the members of Parliament and State Legislatures on the ground of Detection.
• Articles Covered : 102 and 191

Note : 
This Schedule was added by the 52nd Amendment Act of 1985, also known as Anti-Defection Law.

11. ELEVENTH SCHEDULE :
• Specifies the Powers, Authority and Responsibilities of Panchayat. It has 29 matters.
 Article Covered : 243-G

Note : 
This schedule was added by the 73rd Amendment Act of 1992.

12. TWELFTH SCHEDULE :
• Specifies the Powers, Authority and Responsibilities of Municipalities. It has 18 matters.
• Article Covered : 243-W

Note :
This Schedule was added by the 74th Amendment Act of 1992.
