Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said, we need new KYC campaign means Know Your Constitution on the occasion of Constitutional Day (26th November 2020) at the All India Presiding Officers' Conference at Kevadiya in Gujarat. He said a special feature our Constitution was the 'importance given to duties, something Mahatma Gandhi was very keen about'.





The 'Constitution of India' is a result of exhaustive research and deliberation of a body of experts. A Holy document written over 70 years ago is the most relevant at these times for the government, judiciary and citizens alike. Withstanding its core principles of justice, liberty and equality, reminding the citizens of their fundamental duties to uphold unity and integrity, and the Directive Principles for the government, our constitution is the guiding light for the Indian society as a whole.



The Constitution of India adopted on November 26, 1949, contained a Preamble, 395 Articles and 8 Schedules. The Preamble was enacted after the entire Constitution was already enacted.

Several Interesting Facts About The Indian Constitution :

• Father of the Constitution of India - Dr. B R Ambedkar :

 He was a brilliant writer, constitutional expert, undisputed leader of the schedule castes and the 'chief architect of the Constitution of India' is also known as a 'Modern Manu'.

Dr. B R Ambedkar had said : "Constitution is not a mere lawyer's document, it is vehicle of life, and its spirit is always a spirit of age."

• The Handwritten Constitution :

The Original Constitution of India was not typest or printed but handwritten and calligraphed  in both English and Hindi.

It was entirely handcrafted by the artists of Shantiniketan under the guidance of Acharya Nandalal Bose, with the calligraphy text done by Prem Behari Narain Raizada in Delhi. 

• The Original Constitution Written in Hindi and English :

The original copies of the Indian Constitution were written in Hindi and English. Each member of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the Constitution, signed two copies of the constitution, one in Hindi and the other in English.

• The Original Copies of the Constitution are Kept in Special Cases :

,The Original Copies are kept in special helium-filled cases in the Library of the Parliament of India. 

• Artwork of the Constitution :

The artwork and illustrations (22 in all), mostly in miniature style, it represent different periods of the history of the Indian subcontinent, ranging from Mohenjo-Daro in the Indus Valley, the Vedic Period, the Gupta and Maurya Empire and Mughal era to the National Freedom Movement. 

• Lengthiest Written Constitution in the World :

Currently, it has a Preamble, 22 Parts with 448 Articles, 12 Schedules, 5 Appendices and 115 amendments.

• Preamble of the Constitution :

 The Preamble of the Constitution Declares India a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular and Democratic Republic and secure Justice, Liberty and Equality for the people and promoting Fraternity, Dignity, of the Individual and Unity and Integrity of the Nation.

• The Constituent Assembly Met First Time : 

It was held on December 9, 1946. Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha was the first president (temporary chairman of the Assembly) of the Constituent Assembly.

• Constituent Assembly Time, Session, Draft, Expenditure :

The Constituent Assembly had 11 sessions over Two Years, 11  months and 18 days  and draft Constitution was consider for 114 days. Total expenditure incurred on making the constitution amounted to Rs. 64 lakh.

• Adoption Date of the Constitution :

The Constitution of India stipulates November 26, 1949 as the date.

• The Constitution was Legally Enforced :

It was enforced on 26 January 1950. The 26 January was chosen due to historical importance of Purna Swaraj (in Lohore Session) of 1930. That date make our country a Sovereign Republic.

• Constitution of India : Borrowed from Various Sources :

Most of Indian Constitution provision borrowed from the constitutions of various other countries as well as from the Government of India Act of 1935. 

• Elected Parliament :

The first elected Parliament with the two Houses came into being in May 1952.

• Indian Constitution Synthesis of both Flexibility and Rigidity :

It requires a special as well as ordinary procedure for its amendment.

• Synthesis of Parliamentary Sovereignty and Judicial Supremacy :

India have 'Procedure Established by Law' and 'Judicial Review'.

• Amendment Only 103 Times in Over 70 Years :

As of January 2019, there have been 103 amendment to the Constitution of India since it was first enacted in 1950.

The original version of the constitution, which was adopted on November 26, 1949, included a Preamble, 395 articles divided into 22 parts, and eight schedules. Since its enactment in 1950, 104 amendments have been made, bringing the total number of articles to 448. Additionally, the constitution now comprises 12 schedules and 25 parts.

• Constitution Day :

It was in 2015, the 125th birth anniversary year of Baba Bharat Ratna Saheb  Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar that Government of India decided to celebrate 26 the November, as 'Constitution Day' every year.



The Constitution of India lies at the foundation of the world's largest democracy. This is the supreme document in the country's democratic framework and it continuously guides us in our endeavours.
