UCCN : UNESCO Creative Cities Network

Why in News ?

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has designated Mumbai and Hyderabad in UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) among the 66 cities selected on the celebration of World Cities Day 2019 (31st October).

• The theme for World Cities Day, 2019 is, "Changing the World : innovations and a better life for future generations".

• Now total creative cities (UCCN) are 246 cities (with addition of 66 new cities).

Mumbai as a member of UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of FILM &
Hyderabad in the field of GASTRONOMY.



Currently, there are Five Indian cities in UCCN as follows :

1. Jaipur : Crafts and Folk Arts (2015).
2. Varanasi : Creative city of Music (2015).
3. Chennai : Creative city of Music (2017).
4. Mumbai : Film (2019).
5. Hyderabad : Gastronomy (2019).

Gastronomy :
Gastronomy is the study of the relationship between food and culture, the art of preparing and serving rich or delicate  and appetizing food, the cooking style of particular regions, and the science of good eating.

What is UCCN ?

UCCN, created in 2004, is a network of cities which are thriving, active centres of cultural activities in their respective countries. The UNESCO Creative Cities Network now counts a total of 246 cities.

Significance :

The member cities pledge to share best practices and develop partnership involving public and private sectors as well as civil society in order to :

• Strengthen the creation, production, distribution and dissemination of cultural activities, goods and services;
• Develop hubs of creativity and innovation and broaden opportunities for creators and professionals in the cultural sector; 
• Improve access to and participation in cultural life, in particular for marginalized or vulnerable groups and individuals;
• Fully integrate culture and creativity into sustainable development plan.

Mission :

By joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), they work together towards a common mission : placing creativity and the creative economy at the core of their urban development plans to make cities safe, resilient, inclusive and sustainable, in the line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

UCCN Classified into 7 Categories :

1. Crafts and Folk Arts
2. Design
3. Film
4. Gastronomy
5. Music
6. Media Arts
7. Literature

Ministry of Culture is the nodal Ministry for all matters in UNESCO relating to culture.
