Why in News ?
On the occasion of Republic Day (26 January, 2021), the President of India has approved conferment of 119 Padma Awards. The list comprises of 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awards.
What is Padma Awards ?
The Government of India instituted two highest civilian awards – Bharat Ratna and Padma Awards. Whereas, Padma awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The awards are given in various fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
‘Padma Vibhushan‘ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service.
‘Padma Bhushan‘ for distinguished service of high order.
‘Padma Shri‘ for distinguished service in any field.
Note : The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day (26th January) every year.
About Padma Awards 2021 :
• This year President has conferment of 119 Padma awards, Out of 119 awards 7 for Padma Vibhushan, 10 for Padma Bhushan and 102 for Padma Shri.
• 29 of the awardees are women.
• 10 persons from category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI including former Prime Minister of Japan – Shinzo Abe.
• 16 Posthumous awardees including late singer SP Balasubramaniam.
• 1 transgender awardee.
