UPSC Civil Service Exam 2021

Examination Conducted by : 

The Civil Service Exam conducted by a Constitutional body - Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) (Article : 315-323). All the criteria for Civil Service Exam decided by UPSC.

Civil Service Examination Process :

There are three phases of Civil Service Exam. These are -
1. Civil Service Preliminary Exam (Prelims)
2. Civil Service (Main) Exam (Mains)
3. Civil Service Personality Test (Interview)

1. Civil Service Preliminary Exam (Prelims) :

• Type of Question Asked - Multple Choice Questions (MCQs)
• Negative Marking : One-third Penalty 
• Medium of Papers : Bilingual (Hindi and English).
• There are two papers -

Paper - I : General Studies - I
Number of Questions : 100
Duration : Two Hours
Marks : 200
Subjects : Indian History, Indian Polity & Constitution, Indian Economy, Geography, IR, Environment & Ecology, Current Affairs and Miscellaneous.

Paper - II : General Studies - II  (CSAT)
Number of Questions : 80
Duration : Two Hours
Marks : 200
Subjects :

Note : Paper - II or CSAT (Civil Service Aptitude Test) is qualifying nature (Minimum marks required 33%).


2. Civil Service (Main) Examination (Mains) :

• It is written/descriptive in nature.
• A Candidate may answer question papers in English or anyone of the 8th Schedule languages.
• There are total 7 Merit based papers and 2 qualifying papers. 7 Merit based papers are -

3. Civil Service Personality Test (Interview) :

An UPSC Board members for assessing the Candidate personality.
• Marks : 275

Grand Total Marks (Mains + Interview) : 1750+275  = 2025



Civil Service Exam Eligibility :

1. Age & Max. No. Of Attempts

Minimum Age : 21 Years
Maximum Age Limits & Limited Attempts :
+ For General : 32 years (Attempts - 6)
+ For OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) : 35 years (Attempts - 9)
+ For SC/ST : 37 years (Attempts - unlimited) 
+ For PH General : 42 years (Attempts - 9)
+ For PH OBC : 45 years
+ For PH SC/ST : 47 years

Note : If you appear for any of the papers of the Civil Service Preliminary Exam, your attempt is counted. 

2. Minimum Education Qualifications :

The candidate must hold a degree of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification.

Note : Graduation Final Year Students can also apply.

How to apply for UPSC CS Prelims Exam ?

• Candidates are required to apply Online by using website - www.upsconline.nic.in
• Fee : 100 rupees for General and OBC.
• Fee exemption to Female, SC/ST, PH Candidates.
• Upload specific size of Photo (3-40 KB) and Signature and other details as per Commission recommendations.
• Allotment of Centres : On the basis of first-apply-first allot, and once the capacity of a particular centres is attained, the same will be frozen. At this situation, Candidate will be required to choose a center from the remaining ones.
• Candidates are strongly advised to apply online well in time without waiting for the last date for submission of online Application.
