Why in News?

Recently, the Government of India has launched the ambitious “PM Gati Shakti - National Master Plan (NMP)” for multi-modal connectivity.

  • The people of India, Indian industry, Indian business, Indian manufacturers, Indian farmers are at the centre of the Gati Shakti campaign.
  • It will give new energy to the present and future generations of India to build the India of the 21st century and will remove the obstacles in their path.

Major Points:

Background:

  • Finance Minister releases Report of the Task Force on National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) for 2019-2025.
  • According to NIP 2019-25, to achieve the GDP of $5 trillion by 2024-25, India needs to spend about $1.4 trillion (Rs. 100 lakh crore) over these years on infrastructure. 
  • In 2019, Government of India announced RS.100 lakh crore would be invested on infrastructure over the next five years including social and economic infrastructure projects.
  • NIP will enable a forward outlook on infrastructure projects which will create jobs, improve ease of living, and provide equitable access to infrastructure for all, thereby making growth more inclusive.
  • NIP includes economic and social infrastructure projects.
  • During the fiscals 2020 to 2025, sectors such as Energy (24%), Roads (19%), Urban (16%), and Railways (13%) amount to around 70% of the projected capital expenditure in infrastructure in India.

About Mission Gati Shakti:

✓ Gati Shakti — a digital platform — will bring 16 Ministries including Railways and Roadways together for integrated planning and coordinated implementation of infrastructure connectivity projects.

✓ The need for holistic and integrated development across departments to create next generation infrastructure by fostering

 ‘Will for progress,

work for progress,

wealth for progress,

plan for progress and preference for progress’.

✓ It will not only develop a work culture of completing the projects within the stipulated time frame but efforts are now being made to complete the projects ahead of time.

✓ Rs. 100 lakh crore national infrastructure master plan which will make a foundation for holistic infrastructure and give an integrated pathway to our economy.

✓ It will incorporate the infrastructure schemes of various Ministries and State Governments like Bharatmala, Sagarmala, inland waterways, dry/land ports, UDAN etc.

✓ Economic Zones like textile clusters, pharmaceutical clusters, defence corridors, electronic parks, industrial corridors, fishing clusters, agri zones will be covered to improve connectivity & make Indian businesses more competitive.

✓ It will also leverage technology extensively including spatial planning tools with ISRO imagery developed by BiSAG-N (Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics).

✓ The multi-modal connectivity will provide integrated and seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods and services from one mode of transport to another.

Mumbai Port Trust projects promoting multi-modal connectivity: 

In line with the goals of PM Gati Shakti, Mumbai Port Trust is undertaking a slew of projects promoting multimodal connectivity. “The Trust has set the goal of seeking harmony between the needs of the cargoes and ships on one hand and the needs of the city (Mumbai) and citizenry on the other”.
